A Business Woman's Meaning of Life

The understanding of life is subjective based on a person's history, philosophy, mental process and many others factors in life. To understand a person's meaning and visualize it through photography is what my class Journalism taught over the past few weeks. My classmates and I learned about subjectivity and objectivity,  how photos affected the world around us, and grammar to prepare us for college. We also attended the Chicago Ideas Week for a talk on Journalism and the current political atmosphere. In this unit, Image, we had to interview someone who was willing to tell us their meaning of life and take a photo afterwards. I had interview Dolly Zea, a saleswoman and a business adviser at several different companies. I am proud of interview I did as it contained nuanced information and I was stressed on the original time limit the project was originally due.

It was close to the middle of the night, and we were both tired in a car. My mother and I both came from a long day with little sleep from the night before. I saw her, looking out the window to the road ahead as I planned to interview her about her meaning of life. She already knew I was going to ask her questions for a school assignment, and she persisted for me to bring them up. We were stopped by a train and waited for it to pass by. After thirty minutes, I decided to conduct the interview.

With hesitation, I asked her in Spanish about the meaning of life? After interpreting and finally understanding my broken accent, she took a silent moment and began to talk in her language:

“What is my meaning of life? My meaning of life is my family, my kids. My meaning of life is to help others in need. It is to create a proposal. To have a proposal to wake up every day. A proposal to be a better person, a better mother, a better wife. To be a better companion, to be a better daughter. To be a better boss. To try to do things-every time better. To live life simple and to enjoy every moment of life well.”

JN, "Mother Sitting" web, 2019
The most interesting word to was “proposal”, and she used it throughout the conversation. I enjoyed that it was phrased where it wasn’t fact but a hope for something better. It showed a level of uncertainty that, when we were all younger, we never thought of. To understand the word better, I asked if she thought about her meaning and if her proposals are conscious or if the word “proposal” was built to deep into her that she didn’t need to think.:

“I always think about it. Every decision I take. The consciousness is to think about what to do and the consequences of what happens. That is the consciousness. It doesn’t matter if I do good or bad. My consciousness will state that the action will have an impact.”

The thought I had was how the intent of an action was secondary to the implication based around her comment. It wasn’t for a while until I understood why this comment upsets me because, as an artist, meaning is the strongest part of a piece. So taking out the meaning of an art piece would only take away the implications it brings from said meaning. Therefore, there is no action created by the artpiece, and it is rendered useless.

Throughout the interview, there were words I didn’t understand. There was one word, “madurez”, that piqued my interest, and I hadn’t heard of it when she first said it. I asked her what it meant and she said, “It is to see error in your life and to fix them every time. All the errors, I learned not to commit them.” I was intrigued, but still confused. So I asked if she knew an example. “Yes. Before I thought, for example, when I was young, I didn’t believe I was going to die. Now, I enjoy every moment of life because many people, at the conner, because of their age, are dying.”

An hour after the interview, I learned the word ”madurez” was “maturity” and that when I realize the core of her meaning. The ability to reflect whenever possible. The ability to reflect on a decision and factor in how certain elements lead to certain scenarios. To realize your time and how to spend it with others. For the final question of my interview, I asked my mother how she would imagine her meaning as an image.

“I would be in thought. I would be in thought because I’m a creative person. I’m always thinking. I would be with my family. I’m in a beach with you three.”

My shutter speed, which measures the motion of the frame, was at 60 frames per second for the focus. The aperture, which measures the light on the lense, is at 3.4 since I wanted to show natural daylight. For the rule of thirds, the main focus was my mother since she alines directly on the left side of the frame on the graph (of the rule of thirds). She also has two rays of light (the kitchen and sun) over her while most objects of the frame only have one source of lighting.

After finishing my breakfast the next morning, I saw my mother working a notebook with concerned thought. I opened the curtains (she noticed) and I warned her about me taking a picture. She ignored me and looked down on her notebook silently.

The picture has more subjectivity than objectivity. It shows my mother not only in focus, but in reflection as she stares to a blank piece of paper. Yet, in the background, she thinks about her family based by the treehouse. People could interpret my mother as either planning to write something down or having nothing to say. Either way, both interpretations include the treehouse, which also mean child-related/ideas of past in the background while she is working now.

I knew how the words “proposal” and “consciousness” worked in her mind without her stating them. She was always working since childhood. At times, I would also use the “proposal” method when I’m dealt with uncertainty. But what I found surprising was how she thought of her mortality. As a child, I resemble my mother mentally compared to other siblings. Yet, even when I was young I knew death was inevitable.. I hadn’t heard much from my mother’s childhood besides that she was hardworking and I have only seen passive people of my age deny their mortality. To see that contradiction makes me who if her original description was just hiding all the errors.

The Lemon Commandment.

Policy is a trend where laws are produce from the culture our society creates. When it comes to the the policies of religion, one could argue that the "separation of church and state" has either grown or withered. This is I'm studying during my junior year in the class Policy. During this class, cohorts and I studied several laws that were created through what culturally happened during that time. This included the Vietnam War, WWI, and the recent war on Libya. We went to Cook County Criminal Courthouse, The National Veteran Art Museum, and much more.

What we did for a project was to research a supreme court case and how it affected the citizens of the US. We also had to identify the thesis listed for the plaintiff and defendant on why the subject of the court case was constitutional (or not). For my project, I choose McCreary County (Kentucky) v ACLU due to the interesting arguments used within the case. The struggle I had with the project was time but I enjoyed learning about the rhetoric placed on the case.

A Letter for a Legislator

The government of Chicago (as well as the government of US) gives us the right to recommend and vote for certain policies/laws to better help our society. However, creating laws takes time and effort over a series of committees that modify the original policy so it could fit for everyone. Before the policy/bill is brought to congress or city council, it is introduced to a committee that will approve for a bill so it could move to the next step. This whole process is what I learned at GCE lab school in the class called "Policy". Besides the information on how the legislative branch works, I also learned about the constitution, WWI, and much more. Me and my class also went to the 40th ward to meet Andre Vasquez and learn about the political system in Chicago.

What each individual did for this project was creating a letter to our alderma n (or senator) based around a policy we cared about. The policy had to be within the committee our legislator was in and our job was to convince said legislator to approve the policy . I written my letter based around the new chapters on the "Bird Friendly Ordinance" that create guideline for new buildings near wildlife or in migratory paths. I used a combination of logos, ethos, and pathos to convince my reader on the the subject and why it matters.  After writing this paper, I am proud with the work I did because of how smoothly the process of writing this paper went. I am disappoint however that I didn't use any homemade visual to make the AP more appealing. Still, there could always be next year.

Shut up Peathers

Heather has been an inspiration to multiple people and consider a cult classic to many and was written/directed by Daniel Waters. Known to be ahead of its time, it takes punches at the society of that date and still remains relative even today. It's a movie I choose to analyze thanks to my class called Ollywood, here at GCE Lab School. What my class and I learn understanding film through post production, intention, and much more. We observed this through movies such as Jaws, Lord of the Rings, and many more. We also went outside the school to observe the role of finding the right location for the right film. What my class had to due for a project was to look at a movie and observe it intellectually. I choose the movie Heathers and based it on the characters, designs, motives, and inspiration of the film.
What I enjoy most about the project was that I felt prepared for this after seeing different critics for multiple movies. However, I found it a challenge to edit some parts after feedback, as I re-wrote 90% of the script. Over all, I believe I reviewed the film fairly on what it presented.

Cycle Driver.

When designing an item, one must first ask questions, such as "Will it benefit a specific user compared to a general audience", "If other people will wish for it" and "How is it better compared to different brands". This is what my class, Design and Engineering, is trying to answer. In this unit we had specifically focused on subjects that could help us design items such as graphing, Kinetic & Potential Energy, and much more. We had also met with multiple organizations such as Divvy, BFF Bikes, and others.

(meant to show the calculations of a graph)
What my class and I had to create was a small model for a bicycle that was meant for a specific person in Chicago. Not only that, but we also had to show the calculations on why it was better compared to other certain designs. One of the main struggles I had with this assignment was time and how my partner and I had to do multiple re-dos with either calculations or design on our model. There was also the task of working with a partner and the separation of communication. It was a bit of a struggle, but worth the effort.

(graph itself)

When creating bikes, you could either remodel the bike, or create add ons. Each one brings benefit to the user, while having certain effects onto the movement or speed of the bike. When I say remodeling, I would mean something such as an Evo or Bicymple, where the idea of a bike is questioned and remade. For Bicymple, it would be the loss of the chain and allowing a new way to ride a bike.

Add ons, on the other hand, is the idea where the body of the bike stays the same, while certain parts are specifically built upon to make the experience greater. An example would be a Denny with its lock up handle. It doesn't affect how the bike is ridden, but it does help with the experience. The bike Denny also has an electric power assist, which could help going up certain terrains.

This is what my partner and I thought of when creating a bike for our user. Travis, a 16 year old boy, wishes to bike 5.5 miles to school. Since he passes the coast of Lake Michigan, he faces harsh winds and amplified weather. He lives up three flights of stairs within his apartment. He wishes for a bike that can suit all his needs while also being fast enough to get to school.

Sure, I think most bikes are either aluminum, steel, or some bikes are carbon fiber. So Carbon Fiber is really, really, expensive, and really, really light.” - Marcus

This quote is from a GCE instructor who I (JN) had the pleasure to interview. How this quote inspires the design of my bike! It brings up the idea of mass and weight, and shows that there should be a remodeling rather than an add on. The problem for most bikes is when lifted or brought by hand, the ride could have trouble only because of the fact that it’s too heavy. My bike, however, uses less of the same material. Yet it is built to balance weight like a bridge.

For my bike (The Breezer), I had to create a design and remodel it so that it wastes less money, is 3/4th as light, resistant to the elements, and impressive to look at. Based around the design of modern bridges and advanced architecture, The Breezer is the average body of a bicycle with 1 cm poles with an integrated structure rather than one tube. The handles, pedal mechanism, seat, and wheels all use similar materials compared to normal bikes. This bike benefits users and is better than other models because:

A.It is a well designed bike that pleases the eye with its geometry and can be see through to see what is inside of the body.

B. Uses less metal and therefore creates less weight that also has more creative ways to be locked down to a side of a wall.

C. The elements can easily pass through rather then push against the metal, like bars compared to boards.

It also has certain add ons such as bending handles to lessen storage space, and mountain tires dedicated to resist most of the elements. Finally, the seat has a lovely design that suits the bottom of any person.

JN "Calculations I Can See " blogger.com,

Here are the calculations for The Breezer written down. The calculations show equations for circumference, diameter, and radius of the wheel. Not only that, the conversions of miles to meters, speed, rotations, and so much more. There's also the calculations for the kinetic energy and velocity of the bike.
JN "Calculations For Me." blogger.com
Blogger, Oct 26, 2018
Next, we have both the original design as well as the model. The add ons being the weather resistant or mountain bike designed wheels, its bendable handles that allow easier storage, and its comfortable seating. It also shows what the tube design could have looked like.

Finally, we have the gear ratio, which determines the explanation of how fast the bike needs to be.

JN "Explanation" blogger.com
Blogger, Oct 26, 2018
(For this bike, I believe the best solution would be to have the gear ratio of 48/12.
The reason I believe this is even though the wheel is for mountain biking, The Breezer will always be within
the limits of the city. Therefore, it wouldn't make sense to either add multiple gears or
design the bike to go uphill. Not to mention that time is especially important for school, and being faster rather then durable would create a huge benefit for Travis.)

In conclusion, my partner and I tried to create a bike that was not only sustainable for one person, but for anyone. Travis is not the only person who has these problems, and it would benefit many to have a bike that's resistant to the weather. The two obstacles creating this project were redoing some of the calculations as well as communication with my partner. There was also confusion with creating the model and how much time was allowed. Besides that, I personally believe this project was a success.

While writing this piece, I was at my father's car in a fast lane in order to pass the traffic throughout the city. Each turn and motion energetic as a tried writing this piece. What was worse was I didn't have an eraser and I couldn't think of anything surreal. I wanted to do something that was more connected to myself. So I tried a simpler approached that wasn't surreal but left open for interpretation. I wanted to create a dialogue where certain colors represent the opposite for certain characters. For example, the blue character(Lucy) is rude and arrogant, while the color blue simulates camminity and creativity. This contrast allowed myself to image the personalty of the character better. Though, looking at it now, it still needs improvement with writing.

The conclusion of my story was something I didn't think about for long term. It didn't have a point it needed to go. Or at minimum was straying away from the conclusion as much as possible. The sentences mostly consist of phrases or incomplete sentences. There doesn't seem to be many dependent clause, rather independent clauses. The fanboys are limited, with only 'and" to be around for the most part. This, to myself, would make sense. The concept is that they're trapped in a dark room, and are somewhat in a state of panic. In other words, wouldn't for the most part be necceraly to add extra details into some dialogue if they can't see anything, or are not holding anything in a room with nothing. Just quick phrase to get their ideas through.

There are certain themes within the story. Mainly, I would say the themes being worry, mystery, and anger. These being shown through the characters rather then the narrator. We see this the best in the yellow character, who had just given up at the start.

My hope was for this piece to develop the characters and see where they would all be going and discovering. An idea of mystery and worry. Something where the character's wouldn't discover the room, but also eachother for the audience to see.

Day 2: Caterpillar
On the second day, I tried to revise my piece on the problems I saw. There were four chooses I had to pick from in order to improve my story.

The Rhetorical Canidate

When looking at figure, one should recognize the certain technics in order convince their audience on their position, good or bad. That is what my class, Art of Rhetoric, is trying to understand. These technics being from context, rhetorical tools, rhetorical appeal and much more. We have also went into certain exhibits such as "Remembering MLK" or meeting Troy LaRavie in order to understand their rhetoric. My class and I were had an assignment where we needed to understand and analyze a text that our candidate (which we choose in the last unit) has done. Not only that, but try to conclude if it is successful. What was challenging about this project is the time frame that assignment had. What I enjoyed however was analyzing and stating my opinions on what my candidate meant. Still, I hope you enjoy.

Paul Vallas has been a controversial character since the beginning of his campaign, and challenged multiple people against his stances. From his thoughts on police, education, financial stability, and much more, he has found creative ways in order to achieve the budget for such projects. This is especially a prominent trait shown as he is running for Chicago mayor as of 2018, after Rahm Emanuel (prior mayor) dropped out from being a candidate. Paul, now determined, wishes to reconstruct certain aspects that Rahm’s campaign either ignored or had been work with it in a negative way.

Chicago Tribune, "Mayor Rahm Emanuel..." chicagotribune.com,
Chicago Tribune WebDate Unknown, Oct 17, 2018
During a speech in August, Vallus stated certain policies he wanted to take care of that Emmanuel handled poorly. One of these political issue is that city colleges are structured to teach a certain subjects within the school. An example would be city college Kennedy-King teaching hospitality and culinary, Malcolm X teaching nursing and medical, and many more. What Paul is arguing is due to transportation, time, and placement in the Chicago area limits certain citizens in job positions. He also argues on whether certain job positions taught by certain schools will even be around in 10 years.

Since Paul has been an advocate of schooling, his belief for the system is that there should be core programs instituted within all of city colleges. Giving out less of a identity but allowing access to certain communities. Paul believes that if this policy were due to effect, then it would allow certain unprivileged students gain higher chances of successful occupations within their community. Not only that, but could also help with bring up the application and attendance rate for city colleges.

Within Chicago Sun Times News website, a recording was shown dedicated to show Paul’s opinions on the subject and why Rahm's system must go. To give context, he and Rahm has had a back and forth political argument on the better system that should be used. Paul has also gained some criticism for his policy, such as not having a financial plan on how to pay for these core classes. Another argument against Paul being that Rahm has made improvements within these communities(though forced thanks to the Laquan McDonald incident) by investing in certain buildings or structures. Paul within the video talks about these problems and how he views the whole subject.

For this project, we will be talking about his rhetoric. Such being on how he handle himself in the emotion of the subject, the logic of the subject, and the ideas of trust the audience gains from this interview. We will also be talking about certain rhetorical tools used within his speak. Examples being analogy, metaphor, and much more. Finally, we will be analyzing if this speech was a success in rhetoric.

Here is the annotation of the speech itself.

"I think we should get elections every year, because then we get a quick response. You know, everything becomes a priority. In election year, right around election year. So that’s number one. Number two, this isn’t, this isn’t a redistribution of the wealth, this is a effective, infrared allocation of resources. “Yock, give me magic johnson and 10 million dollar contract,” it’s not MBEWE in my book. You know, giving money to the alternative schools network so they could serve more children, is the way you invest that money. Building a Wind-Trust Arena..su, for 175,000,000 dollars. While not investing in the, the a poles and roles area. So, uhm, it’s a question of, it’s a question of priorities, and it’s not a redistribution of the wealth strategy. There are areas of this city that are contracting and you see them. I was at Anglewood yesterday. Walking..you know, walking down the street. And, and the store fence, the store fence has been torn down or vacant, and I could find, at least in the section I was in, couldn’t find a hard price press to find a fast food joint-so that you can go find and get a cup of coffee. Or michigan avenue, gately people’s store has been shut down for three decades. I used to ride my bike in the five story high parking garage that they had. There deep tour around the parking garage. But, you know..the entire block is almost abandoned. So this isn’t a redistribution of the wealth issue. So you don’t wait until 2016 to allocate money, and you don’t allocate money just on the mero of wims. 250,000 dollars can be allocated without even cityconcil’s approval. You could just simply dispense the resources as you see fit. Usually driven by politics, not by me.”

Logos
For most of his speeches or talks,  its always seems Paul always decides on doing logos before anything else. We recognize this at the very ending of the recording, were the candidate talks about money being allocated.

Mayoral challenger Paul Vallas
Fran Spielman "Mayoral challenger Paul Vallas unveiled..." chicago.suntimes.com,
Chicago Sun Times News, Web,  Aug 23, 2018, Oct 16, 2018
So you don’t wait until 2016 to allocate money, and you don’t allocate money just on the mero of wims. 250,000 dollars can be allocated without even city council’s approval. You could just simply dispense the resources as you see fit.”

Notice that he references to the audience rather than Rahm himself. Almost as if he speaks about the common viewer, who doesn’t understand politics compared to politicians who do. From a certain understanding, Paul is stating that this position allows a person to personalize a project rather than help the city. The evidence to harden this idea would the line “as you see fit”, as well as the impression that Rahm has invested in the black communities only because he needed a better image. Thus, it make the logos of the conversation more impactful because it gives of the impression that the information stated could be personalized by anyone, and that it is already happening.

Pathos
The greatest source of pathos would be the middle of the speech with his grievances and distress within the lots of Chicago.

“Or michigan avenue, gately people’s store has been shut down for three decades. I used to ride my bike in the five story high parking garage that they had. There deep tour around the parking garage. But, you know..the entire block is almost abandoned ”

This text right works for two reasons. One being that it isn’t “I feel” or “I think”, but rather “I’ve been”. The idea that you experience the problem and compare it on how it used to be is strong. The reasoning being it gives of an idea that you, the speaker, have a story with this place. Thus, allowing the audience to be empathetic to you. The second reason this works is that it has a sense of logos with this in the information and the way he talks. These communities have been existing with this problem and giving a sense of urgency.

Ethos
Whenever one thinks about ethos, opinion states it cannot survive or doesn't exist on it’s own. That it needs a sense of either pathos or logos in order for it to work. Going back to the quote from pathos, one could get an idea that Paul came to look at the city first hand, and state grievance from it. Thus, showing our trust in him as he actively goes out into his community trying to stop this.

There are also an analogy that helps with his ethos

“Yock, give me magic johnson and 10 million dollar contract,” it’s not MBEWE in my book”

This analogy is especially important because it shows that Paul has researched certain figures within the communities he his talking about, and is to the eyes of said communities not completely blind. Thus gain trust through not only one specific communities, but multiple who can appreciate those who have taken the time to research.

Stylistic Devices

Allusion

“Yock, give me magic johnson and 10 million dollar contract,” it’s not MBEWE in my book”

In this quote, Pual references a famous pastor within the African-American community, Conrad Mbewe. He also talks about another well known African-American title, Magic Johnson. All to mainly emphasize the point that Rahm isn’t using his resources to the community in a correct way. Rather, is giving out money to the areas and specialities he believes will benefit him. This could also be considered a metaphor since Rahm hasn’t endorsed Magic Johnson, or hasn’t given out million dollar contracts. It still brings a good connect to what Rahm has been doing to the city overall.

Analogy

“I used to ride my bike in the five story high parking garage that they had. There deep tour around the parking garage. But, you know..the entire block is almost abandoned”

Rather than comparing two different cities and taking the ideas that Chicago isn’t as great as one city, he talks about the comparison of the past and present. This, one could conclude, is better than talking about two different areas. It gives of an idea that the city used to be good, or at least functional. But now, thanks to a certain force, it is ruined. It better rhetoric because it alludes to a current problem without saying it and  also gives off the idea that it’s possible to return the community to its original form.  Finally, it gives an idea that it will either spread or get worse unless the city takes action within the long term.

Repetition

“it’s a question of, it’s a question of priorities”
“this isn’t, this isn’t a redistribution of the wealth”
“to allocate money, and you don’t allocate money just on the mero of wims”

Though some people would find these repetition of words sloppy, one could find it has good rhetoric. For what it does is it gives of the impression that the speaker had isn’t pre-researched. Rather, it is something that the speaker genuinely cares about, and shows he/she is confident to keep talking even after mistakes one could criticizes Thus, bring in a good idea of ethos that is subtle, but can go a long way.

Conclusion

The reason I chose this text was mainly because Paul talks about one of the few good policies I agree with. Even though it is expensive, I believe there should be different core classes to open opportunity for different students rather than to force them to travel or pay extra expenses. Not only that, but this speech shows that Paul understands what is needed in order to gain his rhetoric to a certain audience. Using logos, ethos, and pathos perfectly and making seem as if it was all from his personality. Even with the policies I find disagreement in, I still find Paul Vallas rhetorically successful.

Pre-diabetes with a side of education

Diabetes has affected millions of Americans each year with some not even noticing. Which is why I focused my assignment on diabetes in my STEAM class, Cure. What my classmates and I learn is how disease work in a cellular level, treatments in fighting certain illnesses, and the probability of genetic illness. For our final assignment, we had to create a fake patient profile with a certain genetic illness. Then, classmates would research the symptoms and treatments for said illness.

The reason why I choose the illness diabetes is because much of my family has been affect for four generations. My cousin, KZ, was the inspiration for the profile, as she was the one who told me most of our family's illnesses. What I enjoyed most about this assignment was looking into my family tree, and see how it relates to my STEAM class. What I disliked about the assignment is the amount of grammar and formatting I had to fix. Still, I hope you all enjoy.

In conclusion, type 2 diabetes is a serious issue, and needs constant work in order for blood levels to be stable. It doesn't go away easily, and could take years or a lifetime to become healthy. For some people, being a diabetic comes from genetics throughout the family tree. But most of the problem comes from the environment in which the patient lives in. It took some time for this project to be made, and used more sources then the average AP. Reflecting on the class itself, I enjoyed how it integrated both science and math concepts as if they were the same. I also enjoyed on how this paper could be useful later on in life. Still, I hoped you enjoyed the APs from the sophomore year.

Some Books are equal, but some are more equal than others.

In very few instances, the censorship of a book could be acceptable. That being said, there are only very few. Most of the time, the banning of the book is not because society frowns upon it, but rather the banner frowns upon it. This is why I, JN, and my class Forbidden Books research such things a dogmas, religions, and taboos that create the justification for censorships. We also went to several Field Experiences that help us gain a better perspective. These being Woman's and Children's First bookstore, the Muslim Community Center, and WBEZ radio station. What we had to do for an assignment is to create an essay that goes on a position that supports or disagrees with a certain book's censorship. For myself, I choose George Orwell's Animal Farm, as it has been banned in multiple countries around the world. The problems I had with creating the essay would be the research, as certain quotes couldn't be found. However, what I found myself prideful for was the dissection of the book with characters and story. Still, I hope you read and enjoy the essay on Animal Farm.

The Grand Question

Socrates(Father of Western Philosophy) was executed because the Athenians accused him of "tormenting/corrupting the youth". His trial was transcripted and later called "The Apology". He used what was known as the Socratic Method as a defense. The Socratic Method is a series of questions meant to contradict the opposing side in an argument so the other side could see the flaws in their own views . For his case, it was with one of the senators, Meletus, who accused Socrates. Socrates multiple times made Metelus contradict himself, as well as the Athenian government. He was unfairly executed, though his ideas and method will live on for centuries to come.

Hello everyone, my name is JN, and I am taking a class called Forbidden Books. In which we learned about the banning of books, why they were band, and very few philosophies. We had also gone to multiple Field Experiences, such being Women and Children First Bookstore. For one of our assignments, we had to act out the Socratic Method, and record it with a partner. Because I did not find a partner, I acted as both people. The main point of this video is to show the dangers of the Socratic Method, in which one could turn an the opposing side's argument against them. The trouble I had with creating this assignment was the recording during which I was interrupted multiple times. What I enjoyed about this was the characters and the conversation they had. Still, I hope you all enjoy my the video, as well as learn how the Socratic Method works.

The Fox and the Gator

My name is J.N., and I study at GCE Lab School. In it, I have been taking a Humanities class known as stories. What we do is we study about literature and subjects such as symbolism, metaphors, and much more. For an assignment, we had to write a fable that had a symbol, anthropormophic or non- human characters, and moral for the story. I just want to say that I'm proud this project with the illustration created by myself. I am also proud of the story itself, and how it gets straight to the point. What I had struggle however is the symbolism in the story, which is consistant but is hard to find. Still, I hope you like it and that you can be able to find the moral.

There was once a group of young alligators and their father who went into a lake and ate most of the fish. The woodland creatures wanted to tell the large alligator to stop, but they were all too scared to do so. So, for the first time ever, both prey and predator went to the center of the forest to talk about what they were going to do. An owl, on the highest branch, became the leader of the group. Before the meeting began, she told everyone that no one was to be eaten nor killed. All the animals agreed and started with the meeting.

At first, nobody knew how to deal with the alligator. It wasn’t until a bear came up from the group. “I can certainly beat the scoundrel” said the bear. “But in order to do so, I wish to have another cave of my own, as well as all the honey I can eat”. Now, some the animals though the bear could do it. He was known to win, sometimes with just one swipe of his claw. The owl and other animals agreed that the bear was the right choice.

Before the fight, the sun had set, and it was so dark that most of the animals couldn’t see the event. When the fight was over, the bear had wounds from his shoulder to his belly. He was in agony, and said, “ I came up to him, trying to resolve this conflict peacefully, and he attacked me with full force. I came running back for safety.” All the animals shivered in panic for the upcoming future. The owl screeched and told everybody they would all have to adapt to the situation. They all agreed until a mouse came running in and stated that the alligator scared him off when he was taking a drink from the lake. Realizing that their largest water supply was taken hostage, the owl decided that whoever could beat the alligator could get the promised cave.

The stag tried, but he couldn’t run on water. The wolves tried, but the water was unclear at night. Over and over, challengers tried to fight the alligator, but they were always in the dark whenever it happened.

As the animals were ready to accept their fate, a small fox came around the corner and took the center of the group. “ Maybe I could help.” said the fox in a calm voice. “but only if you give me the cave for myself. ”

Now, the forest residents hated the fox almost as much as the feared the alligator. When he was young, he was a trickster. He would trick critters all day and would leave at night. But seeing how they didn’t have a choice, the animals all voted and gave the fox a chance.

At the sunrise, the fox proceeded toward the gator. The alligator looked fiercely towards the fox, ready to attack. The fox only smiled and said, “Gee, you seem tense. What, fox got your tongue?” .Now ,to most, this would seem terrible. But alligator laughed so hard that he almost forgot to breathe .
JN "Storybook" 2018, blogspot
As the sun rose, the fox laid down on the shore of the pond, speaking one joke to the next. Gradually, the gator trusted the fox and felt calm near him. After a long period of jokes, the fox tried to suggest something. “ You know… There’s a really nice pond a couple miles away. It has all the fish in the world, and if you go there, no creature would ever bother you again.”

The gator looked sternly at the fox and spoke. “So that’s why you'se here. You'se tellin me to git out like all the rest of them critters. Well, Ah would, but one of my kin died ‘cause of a ruthless bear. We was just mindin our own beeswax, when dis big old bear came runnin toward us, and tried kill me. I fought back, of course, but right before he was tuh leave, his claw swipes at my son and took his dear life. I won’t stop til I get justice.”

When the fox got back, he told the animals everything. At first, they all didn’t believe him, until he brought the alligator himself and explain his side of the story. They told the bear to leave the forest. As the sun rose, the bear was able to gain justice from the crime, while the fox got his cave. The sun had rose high into the sky, and the forest was able to see a lot clearer.

Cometa

Over in our Humanities class, we learned about stories and myths. We have gone to multiple FEs, one of them being at the Field Museum, where we learned the myths of central America and Egypt. So, for a project, or more better phrase, and Action Project.

First, I was want to stay is this story is in first person. The main reason being is so that the main character, being the brother of the creator, can be able to see her as all powerful, and reflect his feelings on to the audience. Second, I also want to say that this is the third version of the myth. The first and second version was too long, trying to establish character. Because of this, this project was extremely hard with not coming up with ideas, but rather simplifying it.

Third, I want to say that the creation of the two characters as well as the people stems from the idea of Genesis Adam and Eve, with them being created from a power in the sky, as well as the dirt from the ground. Even though it does have some major changes. Still, I hope you all enjoy.

I have never been the one to tell stories, nor the one to remember, but I suppose it’s for the best. My light will go out anyway, so you all might as well learn. But I can’t be able to tell you one part, one section, one place. I have to tell you the whole thing. I have to go back, back before I was even born.

My guess is we were a comet, and crashed on a planet, thus it’s name Cometa. Though, that’s only through speculation. For a long time, I could not feel anything. Then, as the days went by, I started to gain my sense, and I finally woke up in cool surfaced dirt. As I woke up, I saw a girl, crying in the middle of the ground. Even though I haven’t met her, I knew she and I were from the same place. I tried running towards her, but felt something when on the heated ground. It was like the flames of a sun was fiercely grabbing my hand and holding me tight. I quickly retreated back in the cool dirt, and watched her cry in agony. We looked at each other, both in pain.

Then, like mercy from the sky, the mist of her tears began to cry for her. It healed her wounds quickly, and swiftly cooled the ground, becoming clouds. As it end, she stood up slowly and walked towards me.

After that day, we decided to explore the terrain. But there was nothing but rocks and mountains as grey as her hair. One day, when we were walking by, we saw a comet blazing quick through the sky. Quickly, without hesitation, my sister ran towards our crater and came back some cool dirt. She then dropped it in a near by puddle, and waited for something to happen. Within seconds, a unknown material rose from the puddle, and scrapped the heavens. Using the material as a lasso, she grabbed a hold of the comet. The comet struggled and screamed, but with one mighty tug, he fell down to the ground. Before we ran to the crash site, I saw the used material, broken and torn. I knew it wouldn’t live, so I dug a ditch deeper than the seas and buried the material.

When I caught up with my sister, the comet that fell was dead. While I saw the comet crack into two pieces, I realized my origin, and I felt like there should be more. I vigorously cut the remains into tiny pieces, and let it sink into the ground.

As time passed, we both saw that the material grew. I saw that it growing in different directs, colors, and uses. Soon, a whole diversity of wonderful plants came to be. The forest was born. As for the people, my sister and I both saw them create things. They would always build, break, or fight and were quite entertaining.

We weren’t the only ones though . Stars and comets began to spy along the heavens. Overtime, I began to know the stars better. They said their lives were boring, doing nothing but float. When they heard about “mortals” on Cometa, they immediately came. For a short time, everything was good.

The only problem was my sister. She didn’t care for the stars, only the mortals. Whenever, she went to see them, they would worship her immensely. She thought the more mortals there were, the better. She would capture a star, kill them, and cut them all to pieces for mortals to grow.

J.N, "Cometa" Own work  Oct 1, 2017
When all celestial bodies heard, they immediately went back up in the sky. All except one star, whom I knew. He pleaded me to help him stay hidden from my sister. After seconds of thought, I decide the best way to hide would be beneath the planet. We worked on weeks on helping creating tunnels and caverns until they were finally done. As we traveled through the tunnels, I saw that everywhere he went, pieces of him would be left behind. The were a bit small. I ignored it. One day, I couldn’t find him. I searched all around the tunnels and saw his broken essence turn to gem. When I finally found him, he was dying .Too much of him was left behind. Like a flame blown out, his light was gone. His body, glimmering through the dark caves. His body turned to diamond.

I grieved for my friend, became weak. If went back to my sister, she would just be angry at me for keeping a star hidden. She tried look for me, but gave up along time ago. In some ways, I wished that she and I were still alone. Maybe I wouldn’t feel so sad.

The Grey Industrialization( of cookies)

My name is J.N, and I am a GCE student attending my final term for the freshmen year. In this final term, my class and I take a course known as Food for Thought, which studies food throughout history. We have done multiple assignments, as well as gone to multiple Field Experience. One of them being Uncommon Grounds, which is a coffee shop that grows most of there food.
What we had to do for our final assignment is to create a review between food we made at home or at school, as well as food we ate in a restaurant. This was a very enjoyable assignment since it was supposed to reach out to our opinion. I saw there was more of a learning experience rather than a challenge, which I believe there was none in my experience. My thesis is that my cookies will win over the industrail cookies known as Lofthouse do to taste, and I would suggest to you my cookies. Anyway, I hope you enjoy my review on my homemade cookies as well as Lofthouse branded cookies.
J.N "Flour" Own Work 6/4/17
Firstly, I want to say that I love baking these cookies. Mainly because the cookie dough looked and tasted so good. Not only that, but I also tinkered with the recipe. Adding in different ingredient to make it taste good. To summarize the recipe, I first mixed in everything together but the eggs, until it was pale and fluffy. Then I added at least two eggs, then added a third one so the dough could be more liquidy. I then put it in the freezer for fifteen minutes. I shaped the cookies like walnut sized balls, sprinkled some sugar on to them, and baked for 10 minutes. I then let them cool for five minutes, and ate my most successful batch of cookies yet.
I wanted to make this as fair as possible for both types of cookies, and in order to do so, I thought it would be great to let the cookie rest for about more than an hour. This way the cookies that I buy at the store will match the exact same temperature, and would allow tasting to be down to the flavor, rather than the temperature. It also allows the feeling of eating to also be fair as well.
In this assignment, the both cookies have to go through at least 5 criteria that follows the senses. They are;
how does it look

how does it smell

how does it feel inside and outside of the mouth

J.N. Own Work "cookie" 6/4/2017
how does it sound inside and outside the mouth

how does it taste.
The homemade cookie looked promising, looking crumbly yet delicious. As if I touched it, it would necessarily fall into one million pieces, nor with it not leave a slight mess. It had a yellowish tint, with the bottom having a much darker it, as well as there were sparks of sugar around the cookie, magnifying the look and texture. The smell reminded me of a sweet cake batter, but still stayed in touch with the mix of a cookie aroma as well. For the texture before eating it, it felt like it was a small bit rough on my fingers, like a normal cookie would. The feeling of the dish in my mouth was amazing. The cookie itself felt soft, and would continually stay there for at least more than a few seconds, having also the perfect mix of crunch. The sprinkled sugar gave it an extra layer as well, allowing a noticeable crack in each bite, and making more enjoyable. The sound of the dish was a bith squishy, and small parts of crunch in it. The taste was good, and it was very cake-cookie like. It was sweet, but also had some bitter and pungent and that one could argue is evened out, which is usually a good thing. It didn’t necessarily leave a large punch, but rather left a continuous source of flavor for a well amount of time.
J.N "Lofthouse" Own Work 6/4/17
After being happy with the my homemade cookies, I then moved on to the store bought. Because of eating the homemade, it somewhat soured my look on the store bought. Nonetheless, I tried to keep neutral. The cookie I was eating was called Lofthouse Delicious Cookies: Cookies and Cream Sugar Cookies. When looking at it, it looked like the perfect cookie, but not the natural one. If you saw it, the you would know it was made in a sort of factory. It had the exact same color around it, as well some white frosting on top of it. This was unfortunate since it evened the playing field. Yet, I will still try to eat the cookie with the frosting since it came with it. When smelling the cookie, it had a promising aroma. It did smell like cookies and cream, as well as a brownie-sh smell. It has a smooth but also rough texture, and reminded me of a delicate sponge when I pushed on to it. When eating the cookie, it dissolved in less than a few seconds, which I didn’t enjoy. It reminded me of powdered sugar put in water, dissolving into nothingness. It didn’t have much of a sound because of how quickly it was gone. The taste was stronger when first biting it, which was good. But it only felt pungent and sweet, and that was pretty much it. It did do good advertising, since I did gain the taste of cookies and cream, as well as some brownie taste, but not to much.

After eating both dishes, I would mainly prefer my dish over Lofthouse. This is for several reasons, but the biggest reason was the feel in my mouth. When I ate the homemade cookie, each bite felt liked it cracked or popped. The taste lasted for a while compared to most cookies, as well the cookie was soft yet crunchy, in an perfect amount. The Lofthouse cookie was the opposite and what I despise in a cookie. It had a large impact, but for a very short amount of time, and then dissolve. A cookie from any store should stay and make the mouth feel good, with both an amount of crunch and softness.

Then there is the ingredients. Even though mine isn’t fully organic or local, it does have certain qualities that make it have a better background. The better ingredients of the homemade would be:

J.N "Nutrtion" Own work 6/4/17

1. 365 Everyday Value Cream Cheese, which is cow friendly and does not put rBGH in them

2. Organic Eggs

3. Ceresota All Purpose Flour UnBleached, which is doesn’t contain GMOs

4. The cookies from Lofthouse on the other hand contain contain ingredients:

5. Enriched Bleached Flour

6. Natural & Artificial Flavoring

7. Margarine

Of course, both do contain ingredients such as baking soda, egg, salt, sugar, and etc, there is no denying that the homemade cookies contain ingredients that are more farm friendly compared to Lofthouse. So I would have to say that while my cookies are a mix between organic and industrial, Lofthouse cookies are fully industrial.

Finally, there is also the fact of the true personality of the cookie. Most of the time, the grand taste of the Lofthouse cookie mainly came from the frosting. I know this because I would try out the cookie itself on the edges, and it had no personality what so ever. It tasted like unsweetened cocoa powder that was somewhat bitter and not really sweet. To myself, this fact is really ironic since you bought cookies to eat the cookies, not the frosting. That companies like Lofthouse are are putting much more emphasis on the frosting rather than the cookie.

If you don’t know who Michael Pollan is, he is an investigator, author, and researcher in studying economical and political crises that relate to food. He has written books such as Botany of Desire, Cooked: A Natural History, and much more. In his book In Defense of Food, he talks about five problems that large food corporations have that is their fatal flaw which is create in order to gain profit. These are:
J.N "Homemade" Own Work 6/4/17

1. Quantity over quality

2. Complexity to simplicity

3. Leaves to seeds

4. Whole to refine

5. Culture to science.

In the Lofthouse cookies, I could see several of these guidelines. But the biggest one would be complexity to simplicity. What complexity over simplicity means is that each product is meant to look the same in every way in order shut less to cost. The reason I say this is because, when looking at the cookies through the box, every single one was meant to look the same. That each one didn’t have any individuality, and that each one looked like the last. In fact, each one tasted like the last.

Even though mine tasted the same, there were some that were bigger while others that were smaller. They were not meant to be perfect, but were meant to be tasty. Which brings me to another guideline Lofthouse follows, which is science to culture, meaning that it would turn into artificial flavoring. Unlike my cookies, Lofthouse had so many chemicals in it, from bleached flour, to artificial flavoring, to many other chemicals. It was also made in a factory rather than normally, seeing how each one looks exactly the same.
So overall I believe that my homemade cookies are better since they have less artificial flavors as well as having more natural ingredients. It also has a better feel as well as a longer lasting taste.

J.N "Myself" Own Work 6/4/17
Recipe:

1. Preheat the oven at about 350 before making the cookies

2. Mix in the 2 ¾ cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of baking soda and ½ teaspoon of salt

3. Then mix in the 2 cups sugar, ¾ cups of cream cheese, ¼ cups of whipped butter, as well 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, until the mix looks pale and fluffy

4. Then mix in 2 eggs until it looks like cookie dough(add an extra egg if it looks too dry)

5. Put the dough in the freezer for about 15 minutes

6. Take out the dough, and heavily butter up the pan

7. Try to make each portion walnut sized on the pan, and separate them each by 2 inches

8. Sprinkle in ¼ cup of sugar on newly placed cookie dough

9. Put the cookie dough into the oven, and let it bake for about 10 minutes

10. Take them out, and let it cool down for five minutes

Genetically Enhanced Trees/plants Industrializing Technological-advancements (GETIT)

Hello, my name is J.N., and I am at my last term of my freshmen year at GCE. I took a course known as Food, which studies the science behind food through GMOs, the green revolution, and much more. We had gone to multiple field experiences, on of them being a farmers market in order to see the stance for GMOs for farmers. For this term, everyone in my class had to pick a side on whether GMOs were good or bad. I personally choose GMOs to be a good thing, mainly because of the potential it served. There were a few challenges, such as create a video that was very limited with dialogue, but there was also some success in writing the props on how GMOs are good. With that being said, I hope you enjoy my thoughts on GMOs.

Stance on GMOs from JN on Vimeo.

Pros of GMOs from Jeimarous on Vimeo.

My father has always told me that intelligence and improving ourselves is what makes a human being good, to some extent. That if we just learn the same things, plant the same crops, or even eat the same food, we won’t have much achievement in life. That, if we didn’t advance ourselves in religion, politics, human rights and especially science, we would have been isolated. We would have still been a primate in a tree rather than living on the ground, and using fire to advance ourselves. Is it truly bad to modify food that is, in turn, truly advancing the human civilization, and feeding millions? I believe not. This is why I believe that we are doing more good than harm, and that the reason it isn’t fully gaining potential is through economic and political stances. So I will be talking about the benefits of GMOs that have helped humans by growing crops to resist climate change, can be more advanced in the future, and how it increased yields in multiple countries around the world.

First, GMOs could resist climate change such as drought. In the book Empires of Food, it states “Droughts have always been an existential problem for agricultural societies since they first appeared”pg104. It has ravaged multiple civilizations in the past. History.com states there have been droughts in Ancient Egypt, Africa, MesoAmerica, China, and Syria. Now, CO2 has made climate change so much worse where droughts are more frequent.

There is an organization known as CGIAR that is working on the climate crises, and has even successfully been able to create crops that are resistant to drought. They claim in an article “One way in which they (CGIAR) have responded successfully to the challenge is by developing varieties of major food crops that are drought tolerant or escape drought through early maturity”. Newsweek.com states that Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats or CRISPR has also been try to achieve better crops, as well as many other organizations. In theguardian.com, it states that African countries “saw their yields increase by 20% to 30% after sowing a variety of drought-tolerant hybrids.” Another helper in withstanding droughts would be a corn known as Droughtgard, who in pri.org states “certified for sale in several other countries, including Australia, Canada, Mexico and Japan.”

Another idea on how GMOs can be useful is through its potential . newsweek.com states “food production will have to double by 2050, at which point the world population is expected to have grown from 7 billion today to well beyond 9 billion” With that in mind, people have to realize that GMOs could be an essential factor to life in the next 20 years in the human race. This could also lead to the advancement of GMOs in supply and conditions, or in other words, the second green revolution.

According to the balance.com, “There is no faster way to produce animals and plants with specific beneficial traits and, as we learn more about the genetics, many more modifications will become possible.” With hearing this, we can infer that GMOs are already advancing in agriculture in science right now. grist.org even states that researchers are looking into “This newer system (which)is called C4 photosynthesis. Researchers around the world — funded by nonprofits like the Gates Foundation — are working on creating C4 Rice and C4 Wheat. Those crops could grow 50 percent more food per acre.” Also, in Empire of Food, it talks about how FACE is working and examining rice in order to see if they could could survive higher levels of CO2. The book states that “FACE experiment as the world's most educated guess on how food would grow in the upcoming generations.”pg94 So with that in mind, I believe that GMOs can be able to support in the long run, not only in feeding people but also advancing the science in agriculture as well.

Finally, I want to talk about how GMOs have affected people today, and what are their benefits. Mainly, the biggest one would have to be the yield per acre. Alumni.berkeley.edu states “Bt corn has an estimated yield of 34 percent more in the Philippines, 11 percent in South Africa, 9 percent in Argentina and 5 to 6 percent each in the U.S. and Spain”. Not only that, but ingrist.org states “There are 7 million cotton farmers in India. Several peer reviewed studies have found that, because Bt cotton increases the amount of crop they have to sell, it raises their farm profits by as much as 50 percent, helps lift them out of poverty and reduces their risk of falling into hunger.” GMOs are helping out people by create a higher food supply that has grown both the economy, as well as allowing people to buy affordable food. Also, unlike organic, GMOs grow faster and can be able to stay in a single area without destroying forest. Grist.org states “Either we do this on the same land we have today, or we chop down forest to create farms and pastures to meet that demand, something no one wants to do.”

There are multiple arguments against GMOs, and there are at least two that I have seen.

1.Why are there GMOs when there is also hunger in the world as well? Wasn’t the whole purpose of GMOs as to help stop world hunger?

Well, the reason there still is world hunger even with GMOs is because some countries are anti-GMO, while other times GMOs (like most wonderful things) are used only for profit.

With the expansion of GMOs, there have been multiple countries that have banned GMOs for multiple reason. The main two are that monocultures of GMOs are bad for the environment and that they are “unnatural” or are wrong. Though people could debate about it being wrong to mess with nature, the idea of GMOs being bad for the environment is false. Most of the time, it isn’t GMOs that are ruining nature, but rather the pesticides and herbicides that are being inflicted upon GMOs. In fact, scientist are already creating crops known as Bacillus thuringiensis, or bt crops that don’t need pesticides. Regardless, some countries don’t enjoy crops, and they are paying for it thanks to hunger.

In Zimbabwe, there are laws that restrict the use of GM crops, yet they have experienced multiple droughts. In the circleofblue.org, it states ““Zimbabwe’s restriction on the importation of genetically modified crops, limiting the amount of corn and other grains it can procure from South Africa,” Because of their restriction, Zimbabwe is now facing debt and hunger in their country.

2. Are GMOs healthy for people to eat?

The answer is yes. I have read countless sources, and each one of them said that GMOs are safe to eat. The one problem with GMOs is that there are added pesticides on them. Of course, scientists are working on a crop that is known as Bt crops. They don’t require pesticides because they to be “highly effective at combating pests such as European corn borer, rootworm, corn earworm, tobacco budworm, and bollworm” by harvard.edu. One of the biggest examples would be in grist.org, which states “By reducing the amount of insecticide used (which, in India, is mostly sprayed by hand) Bt cotton has also massively reduced insecticide poisoning to farm workers there — to the tune of 2.4 million cases per year.”

So with all that in mind, I do believe that GMOs aren’t just advancing in agriculture, but also in scientific research. GMOs are advancing the human society in so many ways. With that, I would have to bring back to my father's ideas on always learning, which makes us human. People around the world are dying due to the loss of crops and resources. Children in places such as Zimbabwe are going hungry and dying because of prejudice against GMOs. Even the United Nations, one of the most advanced organizations dedicated to helping countries has even stated “Nearly five million people in Zimbabwe - half of the country's rural population - will need assistance by next year”.

“GMOs have the most potential to advance human society since the development of synthetic nitrogen”
Steve Freeman, Farmer

Both these graphs represent the data founded by harvard.edu, and were adapted by Malakof D. and Stokstad E. It shows both the growth of Bt corn and the reduction of pesticides in the US. Since both are related, the two graphs are suggesting that Bt corn are making pesticides more unnecessary.

Greatest Percent Change in both graphs:

Pesticide Use vs Years: 2004-2005

0.1 kg = 2004, 0.05 kg=2005

0.05 - 0.1= -0.05/o.1= 50% kilogram decrease in pesticide

Percent of Plant arce in Bt corn: 2006-2007

2006= 40, 2007= 49 49-40=9/40= 22.5% increase of planted acres in Bt corn
